Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced yard crew foreman to oversee day-to-day operations at the Feedlot. The Yard Foreman will need to grasp the scope of the operational practices and be able to manage the crews daily responsibilities while communicating back with management/ownership. This position comes with notable responsibilities requiring a high attention to detail, the ability to independently solve problems and direct the crew, and handle livestock in a manner matching the values of the company. Harper Feeders houses both sheep and cattle from the point of feeder to fat and the humane and efficient handling of the livestock is the greatest priority of the operation.
Scope
- Receiving livestock: Having adequate pen space prepped and ready for delivery of livestock. Feed put out upon arrival. Unloading trucks and counting off livestock during the unloading process.
- Feeding: Making daily feed calls. Understanding all feed stuffs being fed and all rations currently being used throughout the time livestock is in the Feedlot. Being able to run a feed truck if necessary and communicating with the nutritionist on a regular basis.
- Vaccinating: Prepping all vaccine for each pen or lot. Tracking head counts and dosages throughout the vaccinating process. Ordering vaccine and all materials when needed.
- Sorting: Being able to sort pens/lots of livestock by weights as well as sorting off sick livestock and sexing a pen if needed.
- Shipping: Helping to get livestock up to be loaded for each day’s outbound shipments and preparing for next day shipments as well. Communication with truck drivers and harvest facilities to get daily/weekly schedules in line.
Responsibilities
- Bunk reading and accurate preparation of feed tickets
- General maintenance of facility (fences, waters, manure management, etc)
- Equipment maintenance (either in house maintenance or communication with management to schedule third party maintenance as needed)
- Communication with all crew members to assign tasks and daily activities as well as upward communication with management/ownership to convey any problems and issues found and give frequent reports on the general standing of day-to-day operations of the Feedlot
- Supervise daily yard operations, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to project timelines
- Ability to work within a team setting or independently and be flexible with daily tasks/duties
- Implement quality control measures to maintain high standards of work on-site
- Ensure compliance with regulations and safety protocols to create a safe working environment
- Conduct regular inspections of equipment and materials
- Build strong relationships with team members, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Train and mentor staff on best practices in yard management and safety procedures.
- May be required to lift weights ranging from 30-200 pounds (tanks, hay bales, livestock, equipment parts, etc)
- Walking long distances is beneficial to completing daily tasks around the Feedlot
Work Environment
- Sheep and Cattle Feedlot: Rural location, outdoors
- Work is conducted in all weather conditions (certain conditions change the pace of work as well as the length of workdays)
- Heavy machinery and volume of livestock can create loud noises frequently
- Feedlot is kept clean and maintained at all times of the year and employees are expected to assist in keeping this standard
- 6 days on- 1 day off each week
- Approximate work schedule: Fall season 6am to 5:30pm Spring/Summer/Winter 6-7am to 4 pm
- Every workday includes 25 minute paid break mid morning, hour long lunch period
- The fall represents the busiest time of year for the feedlot and the work schedule follows the increased demand for labor during this time
Qualifications
- 1-2 years of livestock experience required
- Experience as a manager/supervisor preferred but not required
- Bi-lingual required (English/Spanish)
- Familiarity with animal health and well being
- Simple math skills necessary
- Previous truck/equipment operation experience beneficial
- Valid Driver’s License required
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year
