Camp Menzies - Girl Scouts Heart of Central California
Rate of pay: $100 per day during camp season
May 31st – August 3rd
Under the supervision of the Equestrian Manager, the Wrangler is responsible for providing and administering a quality Girl Scout horse experience program to campers in an outdoor setting. As a member of the horse experience team, this position ensures all programming is creative, fun, and follows safety activity checkpoints and American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
Health and safety of participants and horses:
- Oversees camper and equine health needs and keeps the Equestrian Manager regularly informed of all findings
- Ensures the Camp Menzies horseback riding program follows all ACA standards
- Provides camper supervision during horseback riding sessions and assists with supervising campers outside of horseback riding sessions as needed
- Keeps accurate first aid records to be forwarded to the Health Care Manager at the end of each session
- Provides opportunities for girls to grow in self-determination, self-worth, awareness and acceptance of others
Maintains a safe and creative equine program under the supervision of the Equestrian Manager:
- In collaboration with other wranglers, facilitates arena rides for grades K-2 and trail rides for grades 3-adult on a daily basis when camp is in session
- In collaboration with other wrangler, facilitates ground lessons, including but not limited to, care and grooming of horses, horse anatomy, proper use and care of equipment, etc.
- Assists with the care and feeding of the horse herd at Camp Menzies, including times when camp is not is session
- Provide activities related to badges and journeys to campers ages 5-18 years old
- Be the subject matter expert on Girl Scout programming as it relates to horseback riding
General Operations:
- Assists with the opening and closing of the stable and arena areas and camp property, completes inventories and reports as required
- Assists in the general operation of camp, including luggage management, kitchen, all camp events, etc.
- Participates in staff trainings and pre-session preparations
- Communicates with the camp administration concerning camp program, policies, and procedures
- Responsible for maintaining order and cleanliness in all camp areas, particularly the stable and arena areas
- Ensures that equipment and facilities are maintained in good condition. Report needed repairs promptly to the Equestrian Manager
Other Job Duties:
- Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training in regards to horse care and safety and participate in in-service training sessions
- Provide resources and guidance to camp leads and volunteers in horse safety and expectations
- Assist the Equestrian Manager with potential trips, WIT and Junior Wrangler programming
Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum age 18
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One year of college, preferred
- Documented experience instructing in a general horseback-riding program
- Able to pass a basic skills test as set forth by Equestrian Manager
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, unless a qualifying medical or religious exemption is needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels
- Ability to teach and supervise children
- Good judgment to place the needs of campers and camp community above personal desires
Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior
- Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more)
- Ability to safely and properly work with horses and children simultaneously
- Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency
OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS
We are a Girl Scout camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with Girl Scouts for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.
While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
