Versatile, experienced working ranch manager needed for a 450 cow dryland cow/calf operation in north central Montana. In addition to being the “boots on the ground” ranch hand, the ranch manager will play a key role communicating with the owners to oversee and implement ranch plans and operations. Candidates will be expected to work with the owners to run the ranch successfully when the owners are either on-site or away for periods of time. We are looking for a manager interested in longevity, the opportunity to build equity in cattle, and building a life on a working family cattle ranch. Couples welcome and encouraged.

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS RELATIVE TO MANAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS:

  • Ranch management and leadership skills, effective communication skills, money management and practical economic skills, strong work ethic, ability to work independently;
  • work with owners to develop annual operating and capital budgets and recommend strategies to generate sustainable profits and mitigate risk;
  • collaborate with neighbors, local businesses, lessors, lessees, as well as with local, state, and federal agencies;
  • hire, train, supervise, and dismiss additional help as needed and approved by the owner;
  • exercise financial oversight including monitoring expenditures, submitting operational and capital expenditure requests . Work with vendors to ensure competitive pricing of products and services and track expenditures;
  • maintain calving, cattle, and herd health records in the CattleMax software system and, with the owners, use the data to make decisions and market cattle NHT and Natural;
  • ensure compliance with safety protocols;
  • treat the ranch as both a home and a business.

SPECIFIC DUTIES RELATIVE TO THE WORK EXPECTATIONS:

  • Identify equipment problems and repair as necessary;
  • use low stress cattle handling techniques;
  • pasture calve, brand on a hydraulic table, and run 4-wheelers for most cattle work;
  • maintain pastures for quantity/quality of grass, noxious and invasive weed control, and pasture rotation;
  • oversee ranch infrastructure improvements and maintenance including fences, buildings, cattle handling facilities, water pipeline systems, and roads. Collaborate with owners to complete or outsource work as needed;
  • manage a 1000 acre dryland haying operation in collaboration with owner;
  • monitor and ensure the upkeep of the ranch yard, outsourcing work as needed in coordination with ranch owners.

  • A competitive manager’s salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.
