Position Summary:

Actively participate in and occasionally supervise day-to-day operations of the family’s ranch in Camp Verde, Texas. Work as part of a cohesive team to maintain the ranch in such a manner that all building components, systems, equipment, and guest services are properly maintained and safe. Willing to take guidance & direction from Ranch Manager, work well with other ranch team members, and work without constant supervision. Ability to oversee the ranch, to provide horsemanship skills, assist in family hunts and fishing activities in such a manner that adheres to safety guidelines, equipment upkeep, and guest services. Responsible for the well-being of all natural resources (trees, plants, animals, and wildlife).

Major Accountabilities:

Personnel management

  • Actively participate in day-to-day operations, work with and at times oversee the staff of 3 other ranch personnel.
  • In the absence of the Ranch Manager, manage staff schedules ensuring personnel is on the ranch or available 24-7, with ranch coverage on weekends.

Operational management

  • Help train and supervise any new personnel to include providing effective leadership, motivation, and accountability for the team as well as consistent performance by all—in keeping with Family values treating all ranch employees with appropriate respect.
  • Ability to maintain a ‘positive and harmonious’ work environment.
  • A staff member is to be on call at all times, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Help manage all maintenance, repairs and any renovations to buildings and ranch grounds/yards ** the ranch manager schedules and works with outside contractors for most major projects. Expectation is for the Working Ranch Foreman and team to check the homes weekly and handle small maintenance projects.
  • Assist Ranch Manager in responsibilities for all equipment, including heavy equipment, workshop equipment, as well as all inventory for the property.

Facilities management

  • Along with the ranch manager and other team members, represent the ranch in facilities management projects (planning, recommending, reviewing, and oversight of construction) alongside contractors, architects, engineers, project management.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to determine need and extent of service, equipment required, and type and number of operation and maintenance personnel needed.
  • Participate in fulfillment of short and long-term facility utilization plans and range/wildlife management plans.
  • Help manage and organize multi-skilled staff in planning and performing all aspects of building and grounds maintenance, repair (including fences), cleaning, and construction throughout the Ranch.
  • Work with, at times oversee, and train assigned staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Conduct walk-through inspections of all houses regularly and a walk-through pre and post family visit for any maintenance issues.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of all ranch owned vehicles/trucks.

Game management

  • Participate in projects and routine tasks required for short and long-term health and maintenance programs for all range management, wildlife, including animals, fish, trees, plants, flowers, etc.
  • Horse upkeep, safety, and maintenance for team of 10-15 horses. Upkeep and maintenance of the barn which is used for storage as well as the horses.
  • Perform all aspects of hunting, to include stalking or hunting from a blind, and game recovery.
  • Knowledge of and execution of proper hunting safety and participate in training of other employees and possibly youth hunters.
  • Work with the Ranch Manager to organize hunting with family and friends of the family. Contribute to and participate in a yearly season opening meeting with all family hunters to review hunting procedures/policies and targeted game.
  • Train new hunters on hunter safety and processes.
  • Maintain the existing feeding program that sufficiently satisfies the needs of the ranch game animals, and coincides with the natural growth cycles of each species, and includes necessary medication to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Participate in the hog control program. No hunting with dogs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill in facility management and infrastructure planning, design, and implementation.
  • Proficiency and experience with horses and horseback riding
  • Ability to lift 90 pounds
  • General landscaping
  • Proficient with a chainsaw & land clearing equipment
  • Knowledge and experience with basic home maintenance and repairs.
  • Good interpersonal skills and leadership ability.

  • Knowledge and experience of grounds keeping management and operations.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (including written communication) with multiple families and ranch staff
  • Ability to abide by confidentiality requirements when working with sensitive information, results, and communications. NDA required upon hire.
  • Working Foreman should be professional and personable with an operational mind.
  • Ability to accept guidance and direction from Ranch Manager
  • Ability to fit in with and work as part of our existing cohesive team
  • Leadership skills when required to oversee other ranch employees or projects
  • Knowledge and experience with heavy equipment
  • Knowledge and experience in ranch safety protocols, first aid, evacuation practices, ongoing training of the ranch team in these areas.
  • Ability to read and interpret ranch policies, regulatory guidelines, and other work-related documentation as it relates to hunting and fishing activities.
  • Experience and knowledge with wildlife management and their habitats.
  • Ability to assess game needs, contribute to the development and implementation of plans.
  • Ability to read and interpret TPWD policies, regulatory guidelines, and other program documentation.
  • Skill in providing thorough, efficient, and effective customer service.
  • Ability to accomplish work within required timelines, including short, long, and emergency timeframes.
  • Ability to work with others to accomplish challenging assignments.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure completion of tasks within stated time.
  • Basic skills with budgeting and finance—capable of organizing Quarterly work sessions to review expenses to date, and develop any proposals for significant investment in new equipment etc. *existing bookkeeper pays bills
  • Basic skills using Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word).

Education/ Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Property Management, Science, Wildlife & Fisheries, or related area preferred OR minimum of 5 years’ experience running a ranch or estate of similar size and function
