Amistad Ranch
Overview:
To further develop the European style driven Partridge shoot at the North Amistad Ranch, Oversee and assist in the management of shoot days, ensure effective predator control is carried out, continue to improve wild bird habitat on the ranch, implement an effective feeding & watering regime for game birds and to assist in the planting of game and Conservation crops.
To uphold and continually improve the ranch landscape and infrastructure such as Buildings, Roads & Track repairs, mowing, weed control, tree pruning and ensure that the high standards of Aesthetics currently found on the ranch are maintained.
This position is live-in and the employee would be expected to act as the main security for the North Amistad Ranch and report any incidents to the ranch manager in a timely manner.
Primary Responsibilities and Job Functions:
i. The Wildlife Technician will primarily be responsible for developing the European style of Driven Partridge Shooting at the North Amistad Ranch. This will include working with the Ranch Manger in strategic planning and placement of Game Covers, Hedgerows and gun stands.
ii. Manage, plan and manipulate habitats, including planting of strategically placed Game Cover crops for the driving of birds
iii. Be responsible for Partridge release pen building and ensure that adequate water and feeding stations are installed.
iv. Oversee the health and welfare of all game bird released on the ranch including administering medication when required.
v. The position would require working with the Ranch manager on the planning and implementation of the driven shooting days (Approx. 15 days per annum). This will include the placement of gun pegs, organizing Picker Ups etc.
vi. To recruit and train suitable temporary workers to act as beaters and to lead the Beating team on driven days.
vii. Carry out tasks set and use own initiative to ensure these are completed in a timely manner
viii. Initiate an effective predator control program that supports the long-term goals of a successful driven partridge and wild quail shoots.
ix. Plan and implement annual prescribed burning programs in a safe and efficient manner that promotes increased wild game populations.
x. Reports regularly to the ranch manager on predator control successes and monitors and records levels of wild game found upon the ranch
xi. Work alongside the current wildlife team in constantly managing and improving the wild bird habitat for Game birds such as the Bob White Quail at both north & south ranches.
xii. Use farm implements in a safe and efficient manner when carrying out duties such as mowing, planting, burning.
xiii. Ensure safe handling of firearms at all times.
xiv. Except when on annual leave, be on permanent call-out for emergencies that may happen within the confines or immediate vicinity of the ranches. For example, Accidents, Fire/burglar alarms, wildfire incidents, hurricane damage etc.
Specific responsibilities are as follows:
• Protection and day-to-day policing of the North Amistad Ranch
• To investigate any suspicious activity at the North Amistad Ranch and to contact the police if necessary.
• In the event of an emergency, for example, break-in or fire, to take charge of events and co-ordinate staff until a senior member of staff arrives
• To keep an up-dated list of staff telephone numbers and contact them if an emergency occurs
xv. Ensures that provided accommodation and garden is kept in a clean and tidy condition
xvi. To preserve at all times the good name of the ranch as a provider of high quality sport, the application of highest possible animal welfare standards, the protection of the environment and show consideration for the interest of the community
xvii. Train and work own flushing and retrieving dogs on shoot days and ensures they are under control at all times also to assist dog trainer in use of Pointers when carrying out population density surveys.
xviii. Works within the company Health & Safety guidelines and reports to the Ranch manager or Foreman those that fail to do so.
xix. General
Helps to ensure that shoot days on either ranch go smoothly and that standards are of the highest level. Assist others in achieving their goals and that of the Ranch in providing the owners and their guests with an enjoyable experience. Is always polite and helpful with the owner’s guest and other visitors to the ranch.
Years of Experience preferred: A passion for hunting is essential but must have at least three years guiding experience
