We are looking for a ranch manager (to work with owner on site) of our 1,800 acre cattle and sheep ranch in Siskiyou County CA to start immediately.
ABOUT US: we are husband and wife running a family ranch raising 200+ head of commercial black angus cattle and 300+ head of heritage breed navajo churro sheep as well as pigs, chickens and turkeys. We have four young daughters and live on the ranch full time. We raise beef, lamb, pork and eggs to sell conventionally and direct to our customers, as well as hay for our animals and some for market. We work hard on the ranch everyday and as we like to say there is nothing above us and nothing below us – we are looking for someone with the same positive attitude to work hard, side by side with us. We bought this ranch two years ago and still have a lot of work to do to build or re-build the infrastructure for a solid working cattle ranch.
LOOKING FOR: An experienced ranch hand knowledgable and proficient in working cattle. Experience with sheep and/or pigs a plus. Experience building and maintaining fences, managing pivots, wheel lines and irrigation as well. Things that are important to us are a solid work ethic, not cutting corners and getting the job done right the first time, but working efficiently to get the job done quickly and to be ready to take on the next task. We are organically minded and working towards certification and animal welfare standards are important to us. We are open to a husband/wife package with him working cattle/sheep, managing land/water and her working with chickens and packaging eggs for sale, helping with pigs/sheep, helping with bunkhouse maintenance and guests, occasionally helping with the children and pets and household.
You will be responsible for the caretaking of a 200+/- head herd of cattle, a 350+/- head herd of sheep, a small pig (40+) operation, 400 +/- acres of irrigated alfalfa, wildlife management and general ranch duties, along with the owners. Managing all aspects if owners are off property for the day or extended vacation otherwise working along side owners.
PACKAGE OFFERED: Competitive salary, depending on experience.
We do not have onsite housing at this time (we are living in the managers house and use an older 1868 homestead house that is fairly outdated as a bunkhouse for frequent visitors – but we plan to build a home in the next few years at which time our home will be available to a manager and family.) Immediately we are open to a stipend to rent a home in town 5 miles down the road where there are numerous options. Our town, Fort Jones has a great school, restaurants, bar, hardware store, lumber yard and coffee shop among other amenities. Etna, another town 9 miles south has an award winning brewery, schools, restaurants and camps. We can also offer health insurance benefits.
The tasks and expected duties will include but not be limited to:
• Cattle operations management
• Monitoring range/herd condition
• Rotating, sorting, weighing and taking cattle to USDA butcher facility when appropriate
• Branding, tagging, and weaning
• Calving (including heifers)
• Maintenance and upkeep of pivot irrigation systems and wheel lines
• Water lines and well maintenance
• Monitoring native wildlife
• Welding or repairs as needed
• Operating heavy equipment
Qualifications:
• Previous ranch management experience
• Previous cattle operations management
• Preferably some sheep/pigs experience
• Capable of operating heavy equipment
• Strong with good work ethic
• Ability to problem solve and move quickly to access issues and resolve
Valid CA drivers license (class C )
