Focus Ranch
Description: Focus Ranch is located 50 miles west of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and 30 miles east of Baggs, Wyoming. Half the ranch is in Wyoming and the other half in Colorado. The Little Snake River runs for about 2 miles through the ranch. We are primarily a working cattle ranch with occasional guests from spring to fall. We were operating as a guest ranch since the late 1930’s and for years members of the Dude Ranch Association. However, our main business now is the cattle operation. We hire a staff of about 7. The work is diversified depending on the daily priorities. Our staff wear many hats and are expected to help wherever needed.
Wranglers: Must be experienced and accomplished western horseback riders (neck rein) – a cattle background is a plus. Horse experience is key and we can provide cattle training if experience is limited. In addition to riding, the job entails monitoring health of the cattle and detecting sick cattle, assisting with doctoring, helping work yearling cattle when received in May (fly tagging, vaccinations etc.) and shipping in August/September, assisting with cows and calves when they are worked, including branding, castrating, vaccinations etc. We run about 1,200 head of yearling cattle and a small herd of mother cows. We practice holistic range management and rotate pastures frequently in Medicine Bow National Forest and on our private ground.
This is more than just “cowboying”. In fact, we very rarely rope our cattle. Common sense, riding abilities, people skills, maturity, professionalism, work ethic, safety mindedness and willingness to learn are key attributes of the job. If you enjoy riding, unique work experiences, and people – as well as living in a beautiful part of the country, then this is a job worth considering. The position is appropriate for a ranch and livestock internship and may transition into a year round position for the qualified candidate.
Ranch Personnel: Will assist with both ranch and hospitality duties. We are interested in anyone with a sound background in cooking as we provide home – cooked meals for all. Duties might include but not be limited to domestic work, general ranch work within your capabilities, horseback riding if qualified, ranch maintenance, care of barnyard animals, meal preparation, etc. Job skills and familiarity with equipment are valued. Horseback riding experience is a plus.
Benefits: We provide housing, home-cooked meals, WiFi connection, laundry services and more. The pay depends on experience and includes a monthly salary and a bonus at the end of the season. Days off: 1.5/week.
The season is from May 1st until October 1st but we are flexible with dates if they work for us and we usually do hire a couple of students with earlier ending dates. If interested and feel this might be a good fit for you, we would love to hear from you to discuss the opportunity further.
No pets allowed. No housing available for families.
Vehicle is optional and encouraged.
All employees of Focus Ranch must be current on their Covid vaccines and booster by the start date. Proof of vaccination will be required.
