The ideal wrangler candidate will demonstrate both excellent customer service and strong horsemanship skills. Wranglers report to the head wrangler and lead and a variety of guest activities. Wranglers facilitate these activities by asking thoughtful questions to create more purpose.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- Strong horsemanship skills
- Customer service experience
- Ability to work with guests and staff in a team environment
- Working, horseback riding, and driving vehicles in acclimate weather conditions
- Adult First Aid & CPR
Preferred Skills
- Basic Veterinary Skills
- Towing trailers
- Operating skid-steers and tractors
- Fly-fishing and shooting instructions
Roles and Responsibilities
Leading Activities
Horseback rides
- Tacking and untacking guest horses
- Assist participants on and off their horses
- Provide riding instructions to participants before and during trail rides
- Leading trial rides while maintaining a high level of safety
- Trail rides are two to three hours long and primarily walk-only.
Fly-fishing
- Provide basic casting and safety instructions
- Assist participants with landing and releasing fish
- Replacing flies and tippet as needed
- Fishing occurs on private stocked ponds, the Yellowstone River, and its tributaries
Archery
- Driving transportation to and from the archery course
- Stringing and unstringing recurve bows
- Provide basic shooting and safety instructions
- Setting up bows and retrieving arrows
Sporting Clays
- Driving transportation to and from the shooting course
- Provide basic shooting and safety instructions
- Loading and operating automated throwers
- Safely loading and operating shotguns
- Cleaning up the area at the conclusion of the activity
Reflective Horse Session
- Guide participants through basic groundwork exercises
- Maintain safety and clear communication
Facilitation
- All guest activities are assigned an intention: teamwork, risk-taking, mindfulness, etc. to foster more purpose in every experience.
- Wranglers ask meaningful questions during activities and post-activity debriefs.
Airport Transportation
- Wranglers drive guests to and from the airport in ranch vehicles
- Typically, wranglers provide transportation to the airport every Friday
- Morning departures start EARLY.
Horse Care
Wranglers are tasked with every aspect of herd management
- Training, problem-solving, exercising horses
- Moving horses to and from pasture from horseback and ATV
- Feeding large round bales and small square bales.
- Basic vet care
- Administering oral and ocular medications
- Applying bandages and topical treatments
- Diagnosing and treating lameness and illness
- Loading, unloading, and transporting horses in a stock trailer
Maintenance
Wranglers are responsible for the upkeep of infrastructure
- Clean and maintain livery buildings and area
- Maintain and repair corrals, pasture fences, gates, and hitching rails
- Clean corrals and haul away manure
- Maintain and clear recreation trails
- Maintain and clean stock water tanks
- Install, maintain, and remove temporary electric fence
- Maintain and clean saddles, tack, and gear
- Clean wrangler pickup, ATVs, and stock trailer
Off-site Activities
Mountain Sky Guest Ranch Wrangling
- Take instruction from MSGR Head Wrangler and other leadership
- Tacking and untacking guest horses
- Assist participants on and off their horses
- Provide riding instructions to participants before and during trail rides
- Leading trial rides while maintaining a high level of safety
- Trail rides are walk, trot, and lope rides
- Gathering and pushing out heard of +/- 100 head on horseback
Weekend Chores
Wranglers operate on a rotating schedule to fulfill chores every weekend
- Moving horses to and from pasture
- Feeding horses and checking corral stock tanks
- Checking pasture fence and stock tanks
- Perform basic vet care
- Communicate any emergencies and issues to Head Wrangler
