We are looking for a self-motived Ranch Hand seeking seasonal employment who can assist the day-to-day operation of a cow-calf and finishing operation from September 1, 2024-November 30, 2024 with a possibility of extension through winter breeding.
Employment will be full-time and require regular outdoor and physical labor regardless of weather conditions with some work expected on weekends. Based on the applicant, mentorship and skillset development opportunities can be provided in adaptive grazing management, breeding/AI, grass fed beef marketing and ranch management but basic livestock and ranch experience required. This opportunity will require the ability to perform some tasks without direct oversite supervision, while maintaining a high degree of productivity. Must be flexible with work schedule, as this is not a typical 9 – 5 position. The position includes full-time housing and a work truck.
Daily ranch tasks include (but not limited to) moving cattle to new pastures, building and repairing of fencing (both temporary and permanent), assisting with our fall calving season, general cattle care ability/health, running heavy farm equipment, various project work including brush hogging and tasks related to our beef business including some deliveries.
Qualifications and responsibilities
- Experience in livestock/cattle production, from cattle health to basic grazing experience
- Basic animal health and ability to recognize & treat sick cattle (including cows and calves) Note: we will be calving during this season and daily monitoring will be expected
- Basic cattle handling skills with an emphasis on low-stress handling – if not properly trained in low-stress handling, training will be provided
- Experience with fencing infrastructure to enable adaptive grazing management (hard/barbed, high tensile electric and temporary electric)
- Daily checks of fences and gates for proper working order
- Keep equipment operating in good order by following operating instructions, maintaining safe speeds (conducive to equipment staying in good condition), troubleshooting equipment breakdowns, and performing preventive maintenance if skills allow
- Repair mechanical equipment as capabilities allow
- Maintain cleanliness, appearance and organization of ranch houses, yards, ranch barns, pastures, ranch vehicles, and equipment
- Basic computer skills
- Maintain integrity of pastures and land with regenerative mindset
- Maintain a culture of safety
- Assist owners in maintenance and cleaning of homes and other buildings on the property as may be requested
- Regular communication and meetings with Ranch Manager
- Professionally represent the ranch at all times, both on and off ranch
- Ability to work well independently as with others
- Excellent time management and communication skills
- Collaborate on developing and executing weekly workplan; report on progress and blockers during daily/weekly ranch meetings to assess and adjust, alert manager to blockers in progress as necessary
- Is a self-starter with strong work ethic and positive attitude
- Assists wherever needed to help with ranch operations – including special events and times when guests are involved
Additional helpful experience include:
- Knowledge of plumbing and livestock water systems
- Ability to weld
- Mechanic skills and equipment repair
- Knowledge of adaptive grazing principles
