Golden Trout Wilderness Packtrains
We are an outfitter in the Golden Trout Wilderness in the Southern Sierra Nevada looking to add packers to our team. We offer guided fishing trips, hunting trips, and drop trips to several camps ranging from 5-28 miles into the backcountry.
The pack station has been in operation for over 100 years.
Duties include but not limited to:
- care and maintenance of 45 head of stock
- catching, saddling, packing, and stringing up to seven head of mules (sometimes) independently
- providing excellent customer service and facilitating a safe and enjoyable ride for all guests
- equipment repair and leatherwork
- cooking (for crew and guests), cleaning inside and outside as needed to provide for the safety of guests and crew to ensure the highest quality experience.
Our ideal candidate demonstrates strong horsemanship skills (preferred but not necessary; will teach the right person) and experience working and living in the backcountry while practicing leave no trace principles. Candidates will be expected to wake up early, work long hours, perform heavy physical labor, and maintain an excellent attitude with animals and guests while doing so.
A rugged individual passionate about the outdoors with grit, patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor is best suited for this job. Candidates must be able to work independently or with others as both will be required and share living quarters with coworkers for six months. No prior experience packing necessary. No cowboy egos desired. Start and end dates flexible for right candidate and dependent on snow.
