The island is rich in historical significance and has been in the family for hundreds of years. Most importantly, it is an extraordinary wildlife sanctuary. What You Will Be Doing:

  • The island mechanic is a critical member of our team and keeps the island operating.
  • You will perform both preventative maintenance and repairs on a small fleet of machinery, vehicles, and equipment. This includes large equipment (John Deere and Case tractors, a CAT track loader and backhoe, etc.), assorted vehicles, and smaller machinery (CAT, Kohler, and Honda generators, John Deere Gators, Toro lawn mowers, Woods Batwing mower decks, etc.) In coordination with mainland harbor mechanics, the mechanic will also maintain several boats with both outboard and inboard engines used for critical island transportation.
  • Maintenance and repairs are conducted both in the shop and in the field. The shop is basic and is not climate controlled.
  • You will also be responsible for inventorying spare parts and consumables.

Skills and Talents That are Needed:

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in heavy and light equipment maintenance and repair
  • Uncompromising commitment to safety
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willing and able to safely lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment
  • Team player also capable of independent thinking and initiative who will embrace the need for island ingenuity
  • Detail oriented
  • Keeps accurate record of work performed
  • Maintains a clean and organized workplace

Skills and Talents That are Preferred:

  • Welding, hydraulic, and/or electrical experience
  • Technical school training
  • First aid, etc.

What You Can Expect: (schedule, pay and perks)

  • You can expect to live and work on this incredible island, so no commuting or rent expenses. If you do well, we would love to have you return and become part of the team on a regular basis.
  • We hire for a 4-month anticipated term and some of the work will change as the seasons change. We are actively hiring now for an immediate start date and for start dates in the near future.
  • This is a non-exempt position. Pay for scheduled hours will be $2,500/week (minus taxes) which includes both regular and overtime pay. You will typically be performing scheduled work for 10-hours a day /6-days a week. However, as you will be living on the island, you will be paid for 13-hours each day. You will receive additional pay at your regular or overtime rate if you work additional time beyond 13-hours in any day, or for the rare instances your sleep or meal periods are interrupted to work. Your day off and hours worked may fluctuate from week to week.
  • You can expect some other perks:
  • 1. Housing with a private bedroom, shared bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, HVAC, TV, and internet.
  • 2. Travel to and from the island from your home destination to begin and end your contract.
  • 3. 1-week paid time off mid-term to enjoy time away from island living.
  • 4. Access to a mainland vehicle for local travel on your weekly day off.
  • 5. Eligibility to receive a $2,500 bonus (minus taxes) for completing the anticipated term.

Other Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Discretion and a binding commitment to respect and maintain the privacy of the island and the family that owns it.
