Brookshire Farm
We are a 230-acre Louisiana grass-fed beef farm, located near Abbeville Louisiana, that has been direct marketing beef for about 20 years. However, our family has been involved in agriculture since the 1790’s.
What you will be asked to do varies from day to day. The only constant is that the cows get moved to new grass daily and sometimes multiple times a day. We practice high density grazing, so there is generally around 150 cattle of different classes in 0.5 to 3 acre paddocks at a time.
Qualifications:
We will accept anyone with a strong desire to work, who is a self starter with good communication and willing to learn new things. Previous Cattle Experience is helpful but not necessary.
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age with the ability to safely perform ranch-related duties including 10-12hr days (sometimes) in hot/cold outdoor conditions. Candidates must be able to safely exert a considerable amount of physical effort to stoop, crouch, and lift as much as 50 pounds in performance of assigned duties. Also work with animals, farm tools, and heavy equipment and in environments that may contain dust, noise, heat, cold, and rain.
A valid driver’s license is required, and a clean driving record (no major infractions) is strongly preferred.
Experience driving tractors, pulling trailers, use of small machinery, and ability to drive manual transmissions is preferred, but not required. You will be expected to learn these things however.
Job Description:
Help moving cattle includes setting up temporary electric fencing, preferably a day or 2 ahead of time, to control the grazing pattern of the cattle, providing water, and helping to evaluate the status of the pastures both before and after a move. It also includes moving temporary fences and varying grazing patterns so that pastures are comprehensively grazed. During the winter, moving cattle includes providing hay. We feed large round or square bales, which are moved into the pastures with a trailer (weather permitting) and disbursed with a tractor.
We use low stress handling techniques and work is done on foot or with the use of an atv. No chasing of cattle with horses or dogs here.
Help evaluate fencing, roads, and pastures for maintenance and other ongoing needs. Where needs are identified, a strategy needs to be developed to meet those needs. Sometimes that involves use of small machines such as weed eaters and chain saws. We have a “hard” fence around the property and the interior is all single strand electric.
Help with marketing, packing orders (including evaluation of the cuts being packed to make sure that they are properly labelled and meet the quality standards for our products), meeting customers and making deliveries.
You will also be asked to help with things around the house like cutting grass, feeding chickens, feeding barn cats, etc when the need arises.
Compensation:
We offer private housing with utilities included (water, electric, internet) in addition to a monthly salary starting at $1,700-$2,000 depending on experience. You will also get some meat from the farm and some meals with our family.
