General Summary
Contention Ranch is a family-owned operation focused on commercial hay production and enhancing recreational opportunities, such as big game and upland bird hunting, fishing, river rafting, and hiking. The ranch does not manage its own cattle but leases land to grazing operators year-round, with an emphasis on balancing grazing and recreational activities. Farming is conducted on 240 irrigated acres using advanced pivot irrigation systems and modern equipment. The Ranch Services Manager will oversee daily ranch activities, including farming, irrigation, landscaping, equipment operation, fence repair, and weed control. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter with a passion for the outdoors, high integrity, adaptability, and a focus on safety and teamwork, with a long-term commitment to the ranch’s success. No drugs or heavy drinking are allowed.
Location
Contention Ranch is located in Twickenham, OR, nestled along the John Day River, approximately 30 miles NW of Mitchell, OR.
Job Duties
- Oversee daily farming operations including planting, harvesting, and selling hay.
- Operate hay production equipment (swathers, tractors, rakes, balers).
- Spray weeds on crops, pastures, and wildlife plots.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on farming and ranch equipment.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance with the equipment management team.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintenance on all ranch facilities (homes, shops and barns).
- Construct and maintain fences for livestock and property security.
- Prepare recreational equipment (boats, rafts, ATVs, etc.) for events and ensure functionality.
- Maintain the appearance of ranch facilities including mowing, fertilizing, and landscaping.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by ownership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Great communication skills to work collaboratively with ranch ownership.
- Knowledge and experience in ranching and farming.
- Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance, diagnosis and minor repair (farm and construction equipment).
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting, bending, stooping, and walking long distances.
- Basic knowledge of welding and fabrication is a plus.
- A Valid Driver’s License is required.
- Class A CDL a plus.
- Experience with basic power tools.
Compensation
This is a year-round position offering a monthly salary of $6,000. The job requires working 40-50 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend shifts from April to September. The work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and storms. The role involves physically demanding tasks. Housing is available in Mitchell, with transportation provided to and from the ranch.
