We are looking for a full-time person (or a couple) to perform ranch hand duties and maintain a large and complicated water and fence system on our 12,000-acre organic, grass-fed beef ranch in rural San Luis Obispo County, California. This person needs to be a self-starter, with a good attitude that fits well with our vision to run our cattle ranch in a holistic management style. Live and work in a remote area.

Compensation: Commensurate with qualifications. Housing/utilities, work truck and benefits provided.

Candidate must have a strong background in horsemanship with knowledge of cattle and stockmanship, as well as the ability to fix pipe and fence.

Additional valuable skills would include:

  • Interest in or experience with rotational grazing and holistic management;
  • Ability to weld;
  • Ability to operate a bulldozer for fire protection; and
  • Horseshoeing

Primary Qualifications:

  • Ability to ride a horse and work cattle, and confidence with young and green horses
  • Ability to repair water lines, trough and tank floats, maintain spring boxes and generally manage the water system
  • Good communication skills
  • Willingness to occasionally work long hours before dawn and after dark
  • Constructive thinking, problem solving and ability to see a job to completion
  • Work both independently and as a team
  • Good attitude and professionalism in the job
  • Basic veterinary/medical skills, including pulling calves, checking eyes, identifying illness and injuries in livestock

Secondary Qualifications:

  • Willingness to learn new tasks and skills
  • Roping
  • Calm and collected attitude in stressful situations
  • More advanced Veterinary/ Medical skills a plus to assist in doctoring of livestock (or people), including identifying anaplasmosis and milking issues
  • Interest in personal and professional development and continuing education
  • Ability to work in heat conditions, cold and rain
  • If using dogs, have good, quiet handling dogs for moving cattle
  • Familiar with computers including Microsoft suite and apps a plus

Job Duties:

  • Fixing of infrastructure
  • – – Checking pipeline to look for breaks and fixing
  • – – Checking and cleaning out springs on a regular basis
  • – – Checking troughs and tanks regularly
  • – – Fixing fence and looking for breaks and weak spots
  • – – Keep written notes on cattle movement and health when problems are observed
  • – – Brush trails
  • – – Fix the roads
  • Assist in gathering/moving of cattle
  • – – Large pasture gathering for weaning, preg-testing, shipping, branding and vaccinating
  • – – Movement of cattle on a bi-weekly basis for feed utilization
  • – – Consistently ride through and check herd health and to improve the handling of cattle
  • – – Gather and ride country to scout for remnant animals
  • Help to maintain facilities around the headquarters
  • – – Sweeping of barn, garden/yard maintenance, organizing pipe and workshops, preparing for family visitors
  • – – Removing vegetation around buildings at the start of summer (for fire protection)
  • Checking the corrals, gates, squeeze and scales before any scheduled corral work
  • Summer: Duties would be allocated approximately 60% checking and assisting in maintaining water/fencing; 35% horseback – moving cows, daily checking for pink eye and assisting in doctoring; 5% assisting in starting and training of horses.
  • Fall: moving and placing of cattle, helping to place supplement and feed, checking water, assisting with branding, riding heifers during calving, pulling calves as necessary.
  • Winter: Placing and movement of pairs post branding, placing salt in key areas, assisting in moving and riding through cattle, assisting in checking calves for sickness, such as pneumonia. Putting the bulls out. Checking waters.
  • Spring: Placing and movement of pairs, helping to pack salt to key areas of ranch, checking on heifers, gathering and pulling bulls from cow herd, herd health and doctoring, weaning and assisting in shipping (including weighing and eartagging of animals). Checking Waters.
