Ranch Manager ~ Willow Creek Ranch/Perfect Light Ranch
The Opportunity
Willow Creek Ranch is a 20,000-acre property, and Perfect Light Ranch is a 5,000-acre property, located approximately 15 miles apart in Park County near the town of Livingston, Montana. These properties are family owned. Both properties are managed for recreation, conservation and wildlife management and have been the primary focus and activities on the property. Both ranches lease out hunting, haying and cattle grazing.
The manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the property and be the leader of the ranch team focused on maintaining, and improving both ranches. The manager must have strong planning and communication skills. The manager will be working alongside and managing 5 full time employees. The manager will be working and reporting directly to the owner of the ranches
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Infrastructure Maintenance and Repair
- Maintain roads
- Maintain and repair ranch water systems for residential use and wildlife (irrigation and water tanks)
- Maintain and repair ranch vehicles and equipment
- Oversee contract work
- Maintain and repair all houses, barns, and outbuildings
- Landscape maintenance around residences and structures
- Prepare houses before and after visitors
- Maintain fences
- Maintain an emergency response plan regarding injury or fire and keep employees trained on its expectations.
Wildlife and Habitat Management
- Work directly with hunting outfitter
- Interface with game warden and biologist.
- Maintain hunting blinds
- Interface with and assist with owner, and guest hunters
- Plant, and maintain 100+ acres of food plots
- Conduct control of various predators and varmints
- Manage ponds for fishing, swimming, and conservation values
- Conduct brush and tree management using mechanical and chemical methods
- Conduct control of invasive plant and weed species
- Oversee seasonal pheasant stocking
Property Management
- Manage access to ranch by contractors, utility crews, leases and guests
- Monitor property and respond to incidences of trespass
- Maintain good relations with adjoining and area property owners
- Fire readiness (make sure equipment is in good working condition, mowing, tree trimming to protect improvements, keep water reservoirs full)
Supervisory
- Oversee contractors
- Supervise, train and manage 5 full time employees
- Oversee hunting, haying and grazing leases
Administration
- Plan seasonal, monthly and weekly employee activities while maintaining ongoing to do list for times when weather disrupts planned activities.
- — Participate in development of annual budget
- — Manage expenses within parameters of ranch budget
- — Maintain records (documentation of management activities, personal vacation/sick day records, leases, permits, water rights, vehicle licensing, maintenance etc.)
- Various weekly and monthly reports
Qualifications
- Desire to live and work 50-60 hours a week on the ranch
- Education
- — High school diploma
- — College degree, or some post-secondary education or job-related training preferred
- 8 – 10 years of experience with ranching operations and land stewardship preferred
- 5 years of experience leading a crew
- Interest in and commitment to Ranch objectives
- Passion and experience supporting wildlife and conservation management practices
- Experience with operation, maintenance and repair of ranch vehicles, UTVs, trailers, sprayers, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other small equipment
- Proficient at basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and welding
- Personable and able to relate well with owners, other employees, guest, neighbors, professionals, etc.
- Competent in the use of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel.
- Good physical condition and ability to lift 80 lbs
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be able to occasionally work nights and weekends when required
- Finalists must consent to criminal background and driving record checks
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary depending on experience and education
