
Pasture Provisions
The Ranch Manager will oversee the daily operations of a regenerative livestock ranch, implementing sustainable agriculture practices to maximize soil health and livestock welfare while ensuring the profitability and scalability of the ranch. This role requires a strategic thinker who can balance traditional ranching knowledge with regenerative agriculture principles.
Key Responsibilities
Livestock Management
- Oversee daily animal care, including rotational grazing for cattle, sheep, and goats.
- Develop and maintain herd health programs, ensuring all animals receive proper nutrition and medical attention.
- Implement and monitor breeding programs to optimize herd genetics.
- Ensure compliance with organic, non-GMO, and regenerative farming standards.
- Manage fencing, paddock rotations, and watering systems for effective pasture management.
Pasture & Soil Health
- Develop and implement a holistic grazing plan that regenerates soil and improves forage quality.
- Work with NRCS and extension offices to monitor soil health and implement best practices.
- Incorporate diverse cover crops and native grasses to enhance ecosystem resilience.
- Optimize livestock impact to improve carbon sequestration and pasture biodiversity.
Business & Financial Management
- Track and manage ranch budgets, expenses, and revenue streams.
- Source and negotiate contracts for feed, equipment, and processing services.
- Monitor and manage profitability through efficient resource allocation.
- Maintain accurate records on livestock performance, soil health, and financials.
- Infrastructure & Equipment Management
- Maintain ranch infrastructure, including fencing, water systems, barns, and equipment.
- Schedule and oversee routine maintenance and repairs.
- Implement technology solutions for monitoring livestock, tracking pasture conditions, and improving operational efficiency.
Team Leadership & Communication
- Hire, train, and manage ranch hands and seasonal workers.
- Establish clear expectations, roles, and responsibilities for the team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and innovation.
- Maintain regular communication with owners, investors, and partners regarding ranch operations and progress.
- Regulatory Compliance & Market Development
- Ensure compliance with USDA, organic, and regenerative certification requirements.
- Build relationships with processors, buyers, and direct-to-consumer markets.
- Attend farmers’ markets and educational events to promote the ranch’s mission and products.
Key Skills & Competencies
Required Skills for a Regenerative Ranch Manager (Beyond a Traditional Cattle Ranch Manager)
- Holistic Land Management – Knowledge of soil microbiology, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem restoration.
- Advanced Rotational Grazing Expertise – Understanding of ultra-high-density
- (UHD) and high-density (HD) grazing methods.
- Soil Regeneration Strategies – Experience in cover cropping, composting, and integrating legumes for nitrogen fixation.
- Livestock Integration – Ability to balance multiple species (cattle, sheep, goats, poultry) to enhance soil and forage health.
- Low-Input Farming – Ability to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and dewormers while maintaining herd health.
- Animal Nutrition Without Conventional Inputs – Managing optimal feed programs without GMOs, soy, or corn while ensuring proper nutrient levels.
- Technology & Data Utilization – Proficiency in using software for pasture management, animal tracking, and financial planning.
- Business Acumen – Ability to manage the ranch as a profitable enterprise while maintaining regenerative values.
- Marketing & Consumer Engagement – Experience in branding, storytelling, and building customer relationships for direct sales.
- Resilience & Adaptability – Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adjust strategies based on environmental and market factors.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in livestock management, regenerative agriculture, or a related field.
- Proven track record in ranch operations, soil health improvement, and business
- management.
- Ability to work long hours in an outdoor environment, managing both strategic and hands-on tasks.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Technical knowledge of fencing, water systems, equipment maintenance, and digital record-keeping tools.
