Kiowa Division Manager, Silver Spur Operating Company, LLC – Elbert, Colorado
The SSOC, Kiowa Division is located on the front range of Colorado in Elbert, El Paso and Douglas counties. The Kiowa Division is the seed stock provider for the SSOC commercial cow herds in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. Kiowa Division runs approximately 1,000 registered females (Red Angus, RangeFire composites, Angus and Charolais), and approximately 1,700 summer grass yearlings.
Job description:
- Work with the Spur management group; including the General Manager, Feedyard Manager and 12 other Division Managers across the company.
- Develop and implement a long-term strategic plan to efficiently utilize employees and capital assets, improve and preserve land assets, maintain, and augment water rights, and optimize beef cattle production and genetic improvement on 90,000 acres of native, central Colorado rangeland and 1200 acres of irrigated and dryland hay production.
- Design, plan, and implement an annual operational and capital budget with a divisional team of 7 full-time members, 4 part-time members and summer interns.
- Created a management protocol for the 1000 head registered, seed stock cowherd at high altitude under an audited, verified all natural, standardized livestock welfare certified program.
- Enhance and maintain a positive public image through effective management practices and community engagement.
- Select and produce a sustainable Angus, Red Angus, Charolais and RangeFire composite cow herds to provide herd bull genetics for the company’s integrated beef operation.
- Oversee the data collection on the registered cowherd to the in-house database and breed associations working with the database manager to integrate that data into evaluation metrics for the registered cow herd, the bulls produced and the progeny they produce form the commercial cow herds as replacements and feeders.
- Consult with other division managers on herd bull requirements, replacement heifer strategies, feedlot performance and packer data feedback to provide 250 to 300 bulls annually to the 18,000 head commercial cow herd across the company and cooperators.
- Plan and coordinate with industry consultants to determine the nutritional requirements for the cowherd, as well as for the development of 200 to 300 replacement heifers and 1,700 grass yearlings annually.
- Coordinate all asset maintenance and capital improvement projects with divisional team members and company management.
- Market genetics to cooperator herds and the general public, establish relationships with market outlets.
Salary is dependent upon qualifications. Housing, ranch vehicle, care for ranch used horses, ½ beef annually, 401K matching and full family health plan are part of the employment package.
