LOCATION: Bailey, Colorado
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for the care and maintenance of barn, farm, arena, pasture areas, greenhouse & garden buildings, including fences, farm machinery, farm/garden equipment and livestock.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain and assist in the repair of the site as directed by Director Staff.
2. Work in conjunction with Site Manager & Maintenance Specialist.
3. Work on a team of 3-5 other horse and barn staff.
4. As part of the barn staff team, assist in the care for a herd of 15-20 horses including but not limited to; feeding, grooming, tacking, general first aid of animals, mucking.
5. Responsible for driving tractor & truck to assist with feeding responsibilities.
6. Assist Barn Specialist with daily care of various barn animals when needed.
7. Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of all farm/barn/arena/pasture areas.
8. Adhere to all health, safety, security, and emergency procedures.
9. Participate as a professional member of the total staff of GSCO.
• Participate as an active member of the camp staff by performing camp wide duties and responsibilities.
• Present a positive image to parents and visitors through attitude, dress, and courtesy.
10. Work plans are developed with the Director, Site Manager & Maintenance Specialist in conjunction with camp program goals, policies, activity procedures and this job description.
11. Support the efforts and commitments of Girl Scouts of Colorado in JEDI practices.
In accordance with the philosophy of Girl Scouts of Colorado, the person filling this position may occasionally be required to carry out or assist with other tasks in addition to the duties listed on this job description.

QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY
• MUST HAVE WILLINGNESS TO LEARN AND WORK ON A TEAM
• Good skills in carpentry, fencing repair, and general maintenance required.
• Vehicle and machinery maintenance skills preferred.
• Ability to drive a tractor, use a backhoe preferred.
• Proficient animal care and known safe practices around equine & farm animals preferred.
• Lift and/or carry heavy and/or bulky items up to 75lbs such as saddles, hay bales, feed and filled wheelbarrows.
• Proven ability to work without direct supervision.
• Janitorial and housekeeping skills.
• Able to read and understand instructions, directions, written materials.
• Able to complete written reports and maintain inventories required.
• Good customer service skills.
• Willingness to maintain the standards, carries out the purpose and adheres to the policies of the camp and the Girl Scout movement.
• Motivate campers and inspire confidence.
• Work as a team member.
• Anticipate and prevent accidents.
• Meet emergencies with good judgment and calmness.
• Flexible and adaptable in dealing with changing situations and settings.

EDUCATIONAL OR FORMAL TRAINING
• At least 21 years old or have completed high school or equivalent.
• Current first aid and CPR certification desirable.
• Valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the Girl Scout insurance company.
EXPERIENCE
• Experience in caretaking, ranching, construction or building related work.
• Operating heavy machinery.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
• Riding equipment: saddles, bridles, saddle pads, etc.
• Horse & animal feed: bales and bags.
• Equine & barn animals.
• Records, reports, inventories.
• Veterinary medicines, equipment.
• Handheld radios.
• Tractor
• Truck
• Power tools.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Work outdoors in hot, cold, wet, snowy, sunny, and windy conditions.
• Perform manual labor at an elevation in excess of 9000 feet.
• Climb and work on ladders, scaffolding, and roofs.
• Lift, carry or move hay bales, animal feed, boxes, appliances, lumber and trees, and other heavy or bulky objects.
• Ability to lift 75 pounds to chest height.
• Ability to lift and support 40 pounds overhead for two minutes.
• Ability to lift and support 50 pounds at waist level for five minutes.
• Staff shares living and bathroom quarters with other camp staff.
• Assist with the care for the physical, mental and emotional needs of ranch animals.
• Days start as early as 6AM and finishes around 9PM.
• Camp living and activity areas are spread over many acres.
• Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• The position pays at a rate of $17.50-$19.50/hour with housing and meals free of charge.
