Large, multi-generational ranch family in Western Montana seeks a hard-working, committed individual to join the team on their progressive cow/calf operation. The ideal candidate will have a passion for agriculture, a working knowledge of cattle ranching in the Mountain West, and be eager to learn from the many skilled members of the team.
This position is primarily focused on assisting with the general day to day tasks. He or she will have a positive attitude and be able to handle frequent changes in your daily tasks. The perfect candidate will have the skill set to assist with night-calving of first calf heifers and mature cows in a lot/barn setting, without supervision.
The chosen candidate will enjoy less cattle work and more shop time. The ranch tries to complete all of its own repairs, services, etc so it is important that the applicant has strong mechanic skills. Other important tasks will range from welding, fencing, maintaining water tanks, spring tanks, flood irrigation, pivots, etc. This person will be responsible for a lot of fencing in mountainous pastures. The ability to construct temporary hotwires for intensive grazing practices is also strongly desired. This employee will be an integral part of the haying season and will need to have ample skills operating haying equipment, both round and square bales. There are a multitude of jobs on the ranch.
The new team member will understand that this position is not a cow position, however during crucial times such as calving, branding, pre-conditioning, shipping and other cattle work, they will be called upon for help. Their primary job will be assisting with all of the “other” important aspects of keeping the operation moving forward.
Pay is dependent upon the skill set of the candidate. Housing is provided with utilities. Pets are typically not allowed but exceptions are made on a case by case basis. Beef will be provided the next time it becomes available and after a set probationary period has been met. There are a variety of other benefits to be discussed during an interview.
TO APPLY:
Via email, the interested applicants will need to submit a detailed cover letter telling the family why their skill sets and experience qualify them for this position. In the cover letter the applicant will need to verify that they understand that they are applying for this position knowing the tasks will be 40% cows and 60% shop and general ranch duties. With the cover letter, please submit your resume and a list of work references that may be called to verify work experience. We are looking to hire as soon as possible. Calving begins at the end of February.
