Luke S.
My name is Luke S., and I am interested in making a career change into agriculture. I have experience in agriculture, but I am currently a history teacher of 12 years in Sheridan, Wyoming. I am a devoted husband and father of two young children (ages 2 and 4).
Availability:
I am searching for an opportunity to work full time and long term for a reputable operation that is close to good schools and work opportunities for my wife (background and training in both nonprofit work and the medical field). We are more than willing to relocate for the right set of circumstances, but work closer to Sheridan, Wyoming is preferred.
Agriculture Experience and Skills:
My skill set in agriculture is mostly related to the farming side of things; irrigating, haying, planting, etc. Though I have been around cattle plenty, I have never doctored, calved, or ran cattle of my own.
I am an honest, industrious, responsible, dependable, orderly, detailed and hardworking individual.
I am an effective yet gentle operator and have hundreds of hours running John Deere, Bobcat, and other equipment, both agricultural and construction. If I haven’t run it yet, I am confident I could learn how.
Through leasing family land, I have worked hard with local cow/calf operations to design and implement grazing leases. I’ve also spent time developing and implementing adaptive grazing practices to manage land for optimal cattle health, soil health and growth.
Improving land and property through weed spraying and suppression, irrigation infrastructure, improving pasture quality with diversified species and cover crops, creating and maintaining fencing, improving quality wildlife habitat, and preserving great neighborly relationships.
I have experience in residential and agricultural irrigation and fencing of most all kinds.
I love to read and learn about agriculture. I have lists of favorite books, authors, and podcasts I regularly engage in.
Other Information:
I am not a cowboy, I don’t own horses, and my horse skills are minimal, but I can learn anything.
I am extremely eager to learn from and grow under the mentorship of someone who has been farming or ranching for some time. Though I am interested in learning the daily routine of a farm or ranch, I am also interested in the business management side of operating a smaller ranch or farm.
What I bring to the table:
What I lack in hands-on agriculture experience, I make up for with a strong willingness and passion to learn, a strong work ethic, and commitment to my faith, honesty, fairness, and integrity. I am willing and ready to work hard and develop a long term relationship with an operation that is successful, ethical, and willing to teach me.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of working together.
