PART-TIME: GROUNDS KEEPER & Horse Handler
Available position in Sept/Oct. Looking for reliable long-term (i.e. not a seasonal position), part time caretaker for 17-acre, gated property in rural Carson Valley, [northern] NV. Experience handling horses required to help care for three horses as needed. Ave. 24 hours work in exchange for [rent + utilities] a furnished 2BR, 1300 sq. ft. apartment above barn. Duties are 7 days a week. Minimum daily tasks include morning feeding, barn/stall cleaning and making sure pasture water troughs are full. Duties may also include morning groom and turnout/in of horses, but I usually do that. Other tasks like grooming arenas can be done as needed. I provide hourly pay for mowing of non-landscaped grass areas and bridle paths with brush hog or 0-turn mower; pasture maintenance, evening clean and feed, weed control; flood irrigation assistance, and other odd jobs that can provide an extra $500-$800+ per month. Responsibilities include occasional total care of horses if we go out of town. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and move 100 lb. bales of hay, and bags of bedding, from shed to barn.
I need a self-motivated person to be my eyes and ears on the property, knows what needs to be done.–and gets the work done without being micromanaged. You may be asked to manage hay and bedding deliveries, and know when to call the vet if needed. Individual must be knowledgeable on regular maintenance and operation of ATV, brush hog and other mowing equipment.
If you like to ride horses–and have experience riding– that's a plus, but not a requirement. Understanding how to safely handle a horse is necessary. I have a 21 year old mare, 20 year old gelding and 4-year old gelding. All are nice horses and easy to handle. The older gelding takes more time to get used to new people however.
Background check and references will be required. Non-smokers only. Absolutely no drug use or alcohol problems. This is an ideal position for a quiet, single, physically fit gentleman who may have another income source who likes to keep active. I would prefer no pets.
