The Farm Hand/Manager job will be primarily the day to day feeding and care of horses, llamas and alpacas and cleaning of the barn, shelters and pastures. The rest of the time will be spent on seasonal projects around the farm such as helping maintain fences, mow, weed, build fences and shelters, haul hay, shearing, worming and other livestock health maintenance for example. We are offering an hourly or salary position with housing also negotiable. The Farm Hand will be tending to the livestock which will include but not be limited to daily feeding, barn and pasture cleaning, turnout, equipment maintenance and general farm maintenance.

This farm is made up of 40 total acres located within driving distance to Friday Harbor. The island is accessible by Washington State Ferry from Anacortes, WA and the island is very agricultural as well as being a tourism destination between May-October. The farm is open to visitors and has a farm store on the premises. Summers are busy. Winters are very quiet. The farm would like someone who is not afraid to learn but also has experience handling horses and/or other livestock. Currently, on the farm, we have 4 horses, an alpaca herd of 50+, 2 Llamas, Chickens, Dogs and Cats.

Examples of Job Duties:

Daily Feeding of all Livestock
Helping to keeping Landscaping around the property in good condition
Operating and maintaining farm machinery (tractor, gator, mowers…etc)
Keeping the property and equipment clean and in good condition
Performing other duties as assigned by the owner

Qualifications:

Must Have:

Good communication skills
Time management skills
Experience handling horses and other livestock
Possession of a valid drivers license and a means of transportation
Be able to work in inclement weather (mostly wet and a rare snow)
Consistent hard working and reliable
Be able to work alone
Takes initiative (don’t wait to be told what to do)
Wanting to grow and learn with the farm

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Required to work in an outdoor environment – Regularly
Required to stand and walk – Constantly
Required to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 60-100 lbs (think hay bales, and muck tubs)
Required to handle animals

Salary: $17-$25/hr depending on experience, housing situation, salary instead of hourly also a possibility
