THE OPPORTUNITY

The Farm and Habitat Manager will be an integral member of the McGraw Outdoor Recreation and Habitat team. The primary job responsibilities center around applying best farm and habitat practices to prepare and maintain the property. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to guiding upland hunts, clay target shoots, and kennel operation including dog training and handling. The individual will also assist in leading target shooting group events, and general maintenance.

The Farm & Habitat Manager will serve as a team-player at McGraw, participating in an organizational culture that is collaborative and agreeable while enhancing the capabilities of the outdoor team, ultimately positioning the organization for continued success.

Key responsibilities of the Farm & Habitat Manager include, but are not limited to:

Principle Responsibilities & Position Purpose

  • Manage the critical component of linking member satisfaction to the high-quality McGraw hunting experience. This will primarily be achieved through responsible land stewardship and application of industry best practices.
  • Oversee the execution of land management plans, personnel, and contractors while working with the leadership team to envision the future landscape of McGraw.
  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership setting tangible and achievable goals.
  • Inspire and empower a team to exceed their potential, while fostering an environment of trust and innovation that strives to exceed industry standards.

Manager’s responsibilities include and are not limited to the following

  • Planting, maintenance, and optimal manipulation of annual food and hunting cover plots as prescribed for doves, upland birds, waterfowl, deer, and other wildlife.
  • Weed and invasive plant control through chemical applications as defined by state and national chemical applicator laws and best management guidelines for natural areas.
  • Establish and or manage perennial warm season grasses, cool season forage, clovers, and prairie acreage to achieve desired habitats.
  • Harvest remaining agricultural crops, as a secondary emphasis to the goal of wildlife food and cover.

Non-crop and woodland management

  • Control of large- and small-scale brush and native woody plants.
  • Directly oversee and implement controlled burns and care for a wide variety of plant materials.
  • Protect and promote biodiversity within McGraw’s unique endemic ecotypes (fens, wetlands, savannas).

Supervises and develops the skills of team members

  • Create daily work schedules and set priorities for team members assigned to work in the farming program.
  • Oversee effectiveness and quality of work within the farm program.
  • Complete written semi-annual performance reviews.
  • Recommend compensation changes for direct reports that are assigned to the farming program.
  • Train team members in proper use of equipment and farming applications. Ensure proper personal protective equipment is provided to, and used by, team members as the job warrants.
  • Create the farming and land management budget and maintain budget control.

Maintenance

  • Responsible for all General Farm building interiors and exteriors, as well as surrounding landscape.
  • Maintenance and repair of all farming and land management equipment.
  • Member Services/ Guiding
  • Learn, understand, and execute all McGraw procedures and safety for hunting parties, clay target shooting and fishing parties.
  • Learn, understand, and execute the Range Master duties for the clay target center and archery ranges.
  • Provide excellent customer service and exceed members’ expectations.
  • Capable of and willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
  • Willing and capable of working in other departments if needed and assisting the outdoor education team.
