Job Summary/Description:

We are a multi-state, family-owned ranching operation in search of an experienced cattle manager at our NE Texas location. This position requires on-site management of the day-to-day operations of a 20,000-acre, 800+ head commercial cow-calf and stocker operation with land resources comprising of native range, improved grasses, cropland and timbered pastures. The manager will work closely with owner to develop and implement annual budgets and management plans. Responsible for the cattle, pasture, ranch husbandry, employee oversight and day-to-day ranch operations. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision and assistance.

Competencies Required:

Must be knowledgeable in cattle management including herd health, processing, nutrition, selection and assist in marketing. Must be knowledgeable in pasture management including native and introduced forages, winter crop establishment, soil fertility, weed control, grazing and hay production. Be able to manage record keeping on a computer system, and provide reports to owner. Be able to provide leadership and direction to other ranch employees and day laborers.

Essential Duties:

Cattle operations

  1. Check cattle regularly (daily) during the year to maintain proper inventory count and quickly identify if cattle are missing.
  2. Manage supplementation and hay feeding, application of minerals and track inventory.
  3. Organize cattle processing activities in spring and fall to work/vaccinate calves and cows, pregnancy check cows and semen check bulls annually.
  4. Work and process cows & calves according to BQA guidelines.
  5. Provide basic animal health treatments (assist with calving difficulties, treat for foot rot, respiratory, etc.,) to prevent death loss or poor livestock health.
  6. Assist with replacement and bull selection.
  7. Assist in marketing and shipping of calves.
  8. Plan and manage pasture rotations of cow herds through pastures.
  9. Record and monitor health records on cattle, cattle movements, inventory information, etc.,

Farming & Haying operations

  1. Manage fertilizer/weed control applications.
  2. Participate & manage all aspects of hay & wheat production, monitor inventory.
  3. Collect hay samples and soil samples (all pastures) for analysis.

Maintenance of property

  1. Inspect/maintain fences (barbed, electric), livestock watering facilities, corrals, pens, barns and other buildings.
  2. Perform routine maintenance and monitor employee upkeep and usage of ranch vehicles and farm equipment.
  3. Assist in brush management and prescribed burns.

Employee Management

  1. Provide leadership, supervision and direction to ranch employees.
  2. Build an employee team that can effectively meet the mission of the Ranch.

Other

  1. Maintain routine communications with owner and office staff throughout week.
  2. Monitor pecan harvest conducted by 3rd parties.
  3. Develop relationships with and monitor the activities of lease farmers, lease hunters and timber harvesters for the benefit of the ranch and for compliance with agreements.
  4. Develop relationships with neighboring landowners, area ranchers, local vendors and veterinarians on behalf of the ranch. Positively represent the Ranch and its owners in the local community.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of ranching and cattle handling experience; 2 years of supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience using and maintaining vehicles and farm equipment
  • Pulling and backing cattle trailers
  • Accomplished horseman
  • Basic welding, mechanic, and plumbing abilities preferred
  • Conversational Spanish-speaking ability preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 50 lb sacks of feed
  • Ability to walk in excess of 2 miles across rough terrain
  • Ability to operate basic farm and ranch equipment
  • Ability to rope or pen cattle via horseback
