POSITION SUMMARY
The Ranch Manager will direct and participate in all ranch operations for the 10,000+ acre working and recreational ranch. All duties and responsibilities will be carried out according to the ranch master plan set forth by the ranch Board of Directors. S/He will supervise up to eight full-time employees, part-time employees, seasonal employees, temporary employees, and subcontractors working on the ranch. The core responsibilities include the management of, the maintenance of, and the advancement of: personnel, agricultural production, equipment, infrastructures, security, and recreation.
STRUCTURE
The Executive Director of the ranch Board of Directors acts as the Ranch Manager’s immediate supervisor. The Ranch Manager also reports to the Board of Directors as a whole.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Ranch Manager’s main responsibility is to keep the ranch in pristine condition ensuring all moving parts are cared for and functioning properly in order to guarantee all members, member’s children, and member’s guests receive their desired enjoyment. The Ranch Manager will participate in and supervise personnel, agricultural production, equipment, infrastructures, security, and recreation.
Personnel Management
The employees are the ranch’s greatest asset. It is the responsibility of the Ranch Manager to generate and maintain a positive team environment with high morale, high standards, high attention-to-detail, strong work ethics, and a safe working environment with safe working practices. The Ranch Manager will also develop and maintain individual employee schedules, as well as building teams and managing their corresponding schedules for specific projects and events.
Agricultural Production
The responsibilities for agricultural production include: livestock grazing operations, range management, pasture management, conservation easements, leases, springs, water rights, water tanks, water accounting, irrigation, wildlife management, noxious weed mitigation, hay production/sales, fisheries, ponds, and fencing. The Ranch Manager will be expected to work with ranch members and their guests, ranch employees (Irrigation & Hay Production Manager, general labor, and seasonal help), stock owners, water attorneys, water commissioner, electricians, engineers, consultants, sub-contractors, sales agents, local residents, neighbors, and local, county, state, and federal government agencies.
Ranch Infrastructures & Equipment
Infrastructures and equipment must be managed with proper organization and documentation in order to facilitate a preventative maintenance environment. This includes: budgeting for the planned purchase of new ranch, farm, and recreational equipment, selling of old equipment, and maintaining a functional parts inventory. The Ranch Manager will work with the Office/Hospitality Manager (budgets), the Maintenance Manager, and sub-contractors to ensure all infrastructures and equipment are properly serviced and maintained, as well as ensuring all service and maintenance is being properly documented.
Security & Privacy
Much technology is utilized in protecting the security and privacy of all ranch members, member’s children, and member’s guests. The hardware and software that controls the many cameras, gates, and locks must be managed accordingly. Integrating technology while patrolling and monitoring the ranch boundaries are essential in order to promote a safe and secure environment. The Ranch Manager will work with attorneys, neighbors, local residents, hunters, fisherman, and local, county, and state government agencies.
Recreation
It is the responsibility of the Hospitality/Office Manager to organize and communicate the recreation schedule to the Ranch Manager. The Ranch Manager must then balance the aforementioned main goal of the ranch with his or her responsibility to manage personnel, agricultural production, equipment, infrastructures, and security. All of this, as well as communicating back to (and give-and-take with), the Hospitality/Office Manager position, requires intense critical and holistic thinking skills, planning, upper-level management skills, and excellent rapport with the Hospitality/Office Manager position, each staff member, and each owner and their respective children and guests. The end result must be an organized, safe, and stimulating environment for all persons at the ranch.
Special Considerations
In addition to the daily management of the ranch, the Executive Director will impose additional duties and/or projects to be completed in a timely manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in a ranch management related field
- Minimum of 5 years successfully managing individual employees and teams
- Proven experience in hay production, irrigation, and range management
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions
- Working knowledge of common software applications
