Embark on your next adventure. Join our team as an Island Caretaker!

Who We Are:

We are a family dedicated to preserving and stewarding a ~3,000 acre island off the coast of Long Island, New York. The island is rich in historical significance and has been in the family for hundreds of years. Most importantly, it is an extraordinary wildlife sanctuary. Our goal is to continue to preserve and maintain the island for many future generations.

Our small team brings diverse backgrounds and experiences to the job and members are excited to learn new skills. Our culture thrives on people who love nature, appreciate history, respect their colleagues, and are not afraid of working hard in the outdoors.

Mindset is What Matters Most:

We will trust you to act with honesty and integrity. Our team members demonstrate flexibility and easily adapt to a changing day. They come to work with a positive attitude; showing both good judgement and professionalism. Safety is always top of mind.

What You Will Be Doing:

You will work primarily outdoors in all seasons. Maintaining the island means a lot of physical and manual work, but we encourage you to take the time to stop and soak in the views, serenity, and wildlife. The work includes everything from habitat management, to building maintenance, to handling the logistics that come along with island life, and everything in between. Your responsibilities will include operating boats for island transportation or to support scientific research, operating large and small equipment, mowing fields, trails, and lawns, cutting and chipping trees, monitoring island systems (power, water, fuel, communications), combating invasive species, and deer management. You will work with the island’s small security team and may be called on to handle emergency situations.

Skills and Talents That are Helpful:

We are willing to train if you come with the desire to learn! Of course, if you have had experience doing physical work, using small and large equipment, hunting, light carpentry, and/or working outdoors in a remote environment, first aid and/or firefighting training, it is a plus.

We rely on boats for our daily transportation on and off the island. If you have a captains’ license or have extensive boating experience, it would be an added benefit. A 56’ twin engine pilot boat is the main mode of transportation. If you don’t have boating experience, you need to bring a deep desire and eagerness to learn!

What You Can Expect: (schedule, pay and perks)

You can expect to live and work on this incredible island, so no commuting or rent expenses. If you do well, we would love to have you return and become part of the team on a regular basis.

We hire for a 4-month anticipated term and some of the work will change as the seasons change. We are actively hiring for a March – June term as well as future opportunities!

This is a non-exempt position. Pay for scheduled hours will be $2,000/week (minus taxes) which includes both regular and overtime pay. You will typically be performing scheduled work for 10-hours a day /6-days a week. However, as you will be living on the island, you will be paid for 13-hours each day. You will receive additional pay at your regular or overtime rate if you work additional time beyond 13-hours in any day, or for the rare instances your sleep or meal periods are interrupted to work. Your day off and hours worked may fluctuate from week to week.

You can expect some other perks:

  1. Housing with a private bedroom, shared bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, HVAC, TV, and internet.
  2. Travel to and from the island from your home destination to begin and end your contract.
  3. 1-week paid time off mid-term to enjoy time away from island living.
  4. Access to a mainland vehicle for local travel on your weekly day off.
  5. Uniform and most of your work clothes.
  6. Eligibility to receive a $2,000 bonus (minus taxes) for completing the anticipated term.

Other Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  3. Valid driver’s license.
  4. Discretion and a binding commitment to respect and maintain the privacy of the island and the family that owns it.

Life is too short to let this opportunity pass you by.
