We’re seeking a dedicated Kennel & Barn Assistant to play a vital role in our esteemed hunting and land management operations. ABOUT THE POSITION

As a Kennel & Barn Assistant, you will be responsible for the daily care and maintenance of Avalon’s Kennel and Barn programs, assisting with quail hunting activities, and supporting land management efforts. The role requires knowledge of dog and horse training and general property upkeep.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Providing daily care and maintenance of our kennel, horse barn, fencing, and tack room.
  • Maintaining and servicing hunting wagons, buggies, and equine tack to ensure peak performance.
  • Caring for horses and dogs with responsibilities including feeding, training, health monitoring, and grooming.
  • Assisting with feed and hay orders, veterinary care, and farrier services to keep our animals in prime condition.
  • Keeping accurate inventory records of dogs, horses, and mules, ensuring proper documentation and care schedules.
  • Collaborating on the development of a renowned dog breeding program, upholding Avalon’s commitment to excellence.
  • Participating in and compete in Field Trials, showcasing the skills of our sporting dogs.
  • Supporting pasture management efforts through fertilization, liming, and aeration.
  • Playing a key role in our quail hunting program, assisting as a Scout and coordinating hunting course rotations.
  • Collecting and submitting hunting data to the Property Manager to enhance conservation and land management strategies.
  • Assisting with seasonal land management activities, including prescribed burns, mowing, and field maintenance.
  • Providing general groundskeeping around the kennel and barn areas to maintain a pristine environment.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the Property Manager to support the overall success of Avalon Plantation.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • At least 2 years of experience as a Scout or in a similar role, specializing in training and handling pointing dogs and horses for quail hunting.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with firearms, along with Hunter Safety Education certification.
  • This position requires operation of vehicles, and you’ll need to possess a valid driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Your driving record will need to meet the standards and requirements of the Company and the Company’s insurance provider.
  • You’ll need to present documentation establishing both identity and employment authorization within three days of hire pursuant to federal law.

Preferred:

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • At least 2 years of experience operating 150+ horsepower tractors, woods mowers, and other equipment commonly used in quail management.
  • Certified Prescribed Burn Manager certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

On a regular basis, you can expect to:

  • Stand; sit; walk; move hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Perform physical labor for extended periods of time.
  • Drive an ATV, UTV, mowers and occasionally heavy equipment.
  • Be on your feet for extended periods of time.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

You will frequently encounter domestic animals, including horses and dogs. While they are trained or in training, all animals can be unpredictable. Additionally, you may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, varying outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. At times, you may work in elevated or precarious locations and encounter fumes or airborne particles. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fire, and smoke is possible. Noise levels in the work environment are typically low to moderate but can be higher during hunting trips. In these instances, safety gear, including goggles and ear protection, will be provided.

This role requires availability for nights, weekends, and holidays. During the fall and winter seasons, extended workdays exceeding eight hours may be necessary.
