Position Overview:
The Ranch Hand with Mechanical Experience is responsible for supporting the efficient and effective operation of a cow/calf ranch by combining hands-on ranch work with mechanical expertise. This role does not require traditional cowboy skills, focusing instead on maintaining equipment, facilities, and providing essential support to the ranch’s daily operations. The ideal candidate should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on ranch equipment, including tractors, vehicles, generators, and irrigation systems.
- Facility Management: Assist in the upkeep and repair of ranch facilities, such as barns, corrals, fencing, and water systems, to ensure safe and efficient working conditions.
- Feeding and Care: Assist with feeding, health checks, and general care of cattle, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
- Calving Assistance: Provide support during calving season, assisting with birthing, calf care, and monitoring cow health.
- Pasture Management: Participate in pasture rotation, weed control, and overall land management to optimize grazing resources.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate machinery for tasks such as mowing, hauling, and feeding, following best practices for equipment use.
- Record keeping: Utilize software and spreadsheets to track data such as feed values, herd vaccinations, and facility maintenance records.
- Mechanical Troubleshooting: Diagnose and address mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, ranch activities, and animal care procedures.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and fellow ranch team members.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; formal training in mechanics or related field is a plus.
- Proven mechanical experience and the ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
- Familiarity with cow/calf operations and animal care practices.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Attention to detail and a proactive attitude towards maintenance and problem-solving.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills for record keeping.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time position, with varying work hours that may include weekends and holidays, particularly during critical ranching seasons.
The role involves both indoor and outdoor work in a rural setting.
