On the western slope of the Rockies, set in one of the most beautiful valleys in Colorado, Eagle Ridge Ranch is a 4,900-acre ranch owned by fifteen families who share a vision of combining agriculture, recreation, and conservation. Fifteen homesites are located on the ranch, along with a residence for the ranch manager, two rental residences, an equestrian center, and a ranch office and work shed. The agricultural operations are conducted through an agricultural lessee and produce over 1,000 tons of hay each year and support grazing by up to 250 cattle. The ranch provides exceptional opportunities for outdoor recreation, including miles of private fishing on Ohio Creek, approximately 2000 acres of private hunting, and many miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, an ATV’s.
Ranch Manager Job Announcement
Eagle Ridge Ranch is seeking an experienced manager to take charge of all aspects of the ranch’s operations. The cattle grazing and haying are outsourced to a third-party agricultural lessee. The ranch manager would need to oversee those operations and to manage the relationship with the agricultural lessee. The manager would also be required to restore and maintain the ranch fences, all the ranch-owned equipment, and the common area buildings, including the equestrian center. In the winter the ranch manager is responsible for clearing the ranch roads of snow (Eagle Ridge Ranch owns snow clearing equipment). The ranch manager is also responsible, working with the relevant owner’s committees, for maintaining and enhancing the recreational facilities on the ranch, including the cabins in the hunting area, the ranch pond, the fishing in Ohio Creek, the equestrian facilities, and the trail system. The ranch manager will act as a community representative for the ranch and its missions in the local community. The ranch manager must be able to supervise the ranch’s employees (usually two to three full-time or part-time ranch workers) and be prepared to do hands-on work around the ranch. In sum, we are looking for someone who has the experience to oversee agricultural operations, the experience to manage the outdoor recreation facilities, and has the leadership and general management capabilities to assume responsibility for all the various tasks of a ranch with both agricultural and recreational features.
Salary will be between $65,000 to $80,000, dependent an applicant’s qualifications and experience for this position. The ranch manager will enjoy free housing on Eagle Ridge Ranch in a freestanding house.
Additional Details and Requirements of the Ranch Manager Position
1) The ranch manager will report to the officers of Eagle Ridge Ranch and the Eagle Ridge Ranch Board of Directors.
2) Working with the business manager of the ranch, the ranch manager will be responsible for hiring and direct supervision of regular and seasonal employees.
3) In addition, to the responsibilities described above, the ranch manager will:
- Directly oversee the contracted agricultural operations of the ranch.
- Maintain the beauty and conservation practices of the ranch.
- Manage hunting operations on the ranch.
- Supervise irrigation of the ranch and its hay meadows by the agricultural lessee to ensure good water use and hay production while maintaining water flow to support fishing in Ohio Creek.
- Arrange for the maintenance of ranch roads.
- Clear snow from ranch roads.
- Plan and maintain an annual operational budget, working with the Treasurer of the HOA and the business manager.
- Maintain effective communication and reporting with the Board of Directors, and the ranch owners.
- Act as the contact point and representative of the ranch in working with resource organizations, neighboring federal and state land managers, etc.
- Initiate and implement seeking grants of financial support for improvements in water use, conservation measures, etc.
- Manage and maintain the rental properties located on the ranch.
- Operate equipment including tractors, mowers, skid steers, snowplows, snow blowers, fence building, and other various tractor and ranch equipment and implements.
- Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies while acting as a supervisor of employees.
- The position will at times require working night and weekends on the ranch and participation in local meetings and activities.
4) Relevant Education, Qualifications, and Skills:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, land management, resort management, outdoor recreation, or another related field, with preference being shown to those who have completed a master’s degree.
- Knowledge of and prior experience managing haying and cattle operations, hunting facilities, equestrian facilities, and recreational fishing.
- Demonstrated skills working with people as individuals and in groups.
- Evidence of drive and initiative.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Evidence of the ability to work effectively as an individual, a team member, and a supervisor.
- Ability to communicate (electronic, oral, listening, written, and presentation skills).
- Personal skills to manage relationships with owners, employees, government organizations, and neighbors.
- Experience or capacity to recruit, train and manage employees.
- Experience working with conservation organizations and Federal land managers.
- Experience working with or alongside absentee owners or second homeowners.
- Spanish or bilingual speaking ability.
- Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s License at the time of employment, with a good, insurable driving record. Ability to drive a standard transmission vehicle and experience towing trailers.
- Ability to meet the work hours necessary, which include flexible scheduling by working early mornings and on weekends and nights. During winter nighttime snow clearing is often required.
- Ability and experience operating snow removal equipment, computers; chainsaws; mechanical and power tools; snow mobile, and ATV’s.
5) Physical Demands of Position
- Work is performed in both an office setting and outdoors in sometimes harsh weather including snow and subzero temperatures.
- The employee will be required to do a variety of tasks associated with ranching operations including but not limited to clearing roads and trails, picking up and stacking wood, mowing, getting hands and clothes dirty, working in the sun, rain, snow, and around hay.
- The employee will work with and closely around livestock and horses.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various equipment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, jump, and crawl. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- At times must be able to hike at high elevations, in inclement weather, and climb in and out of animal pens.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds especially when feeding, stacking, and loading hay.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
