The ranch is in a transitioning point of expansion, owners of the ranch would like to see the business grow to support a respected breeding program, become sustainable in terms of raising and foraging their own crop to feed their livestock, and further develop the surrounding grass and pasture lands adjacent to the ranch. Horse management has long been part of the ranch activities of W6, primarily in terms of training and supplying mountain-terrain ready horses to guides and hunting outfitters serving Northern B.C. and the Yukon Territory. As of 2018/2019, W6 is looking to further expand their equine stock to begin breeding and training horses aimed towards use in the various disciplines – roping, barrel racing, western pleasure, etc.
Finding the appropriate candidate to advance the program along with the current workers of W6 Ranch Ltd. has been an ongoing project. The appropriate candidate would require extensive experience in horsemanship, general experience and knowledge of daily ranch operations (such as feeding various livestock, maintenance and operation of ranch equipment, and upkeep of facilities, etc.), and management abilities in terms of planning and coordinating of an equine breeding program. Specifically, to the needs of W6, the appropriate candidate must have extensive experience in Colt Starting (mare care during gestation, and colt-starting care and training), as breeding and effective colt-starting are the hallmarks of a respectable ranching operation. Ranch Management candidates are also expected to have the following general skill set; basic mechanical ability (changing oil, troubleshooting equipment, etc.), good hand-eye coordination, appropriate physical strength for daily tasks, able to work independently with little supervision or work within a team dynamic, strong interpersonal skills, and record keeping abilities. Due to the intense and somewhat isolated nature of the ranch, the personality fit of the right applicant is also worthy of consideration. Work days are often long and scheduled by the most pressing need at the time – such as calving season, as such there are no set working hours for this position. Ranch workers must also have a generally calm demeanor, excessive patience, and be motivated self-starters in order to excel in livestock training.
