Philmont Scout Ranch
Situated in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of northern New Mexico, Philmont Scout Ranch is the pinnacle of high adventure program experiences. Philmont is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America and annually provides experiential education opportunities, backcountry hiking/camping programs, and training center conferences for 27,000+ Scouters and their families.
Currently, the Ranch Department of Philmont Scout Ranch is seeking qualified applicants to fill the positions of wrangler and horseman for the 2015 season. Contracts coincide with the summer season from mid-May through mid-August and hired applicants must be able to begin working within a week of May 15th.
As a member of the Ranch Department, you will be expected to ride long days on many different horses, sometimes through tough terrain. Basic horsemanship experience is imperative. Additional training such as packing, herding, cattle work and more will be provided by the ranch. Hired applicants can expect to hit the ground running and should arrive on property ready to work with all clothing and equipment outlined in the employee packet with them. Cowboy hats, long sleeve westerns, jeans, and non-lace up cowboy boots are required as everyday uniforms. Baseball caps and t-shirts are not permitted during work hours. The ranch will provide western saddles and bridles but hired applicants can bring their own. No personal horses will be allowed on the ranch.
Personal skills with participants and guests are crucial as you will be interacting with them on trail rides, with packing demonstrations, cavalcades, and throughout ranch property. Providing participants with a safe and a “once in a lifetime experience” is the first priority.
Additionally, working at Philmont Scout Ranch is a “once in a lifetime” for its employees as well! Hike the 137,000 acre property, visit historical sites along the Santa Fe Trail, or learn how to forge and pan for gold are just a few of the amazing opportunities available to Philmont staff.
As a facility of the BSA, the staff is expected to set an example of excellence in Scouting, which includes the proper wearing of uniform, and adhere to Philmont’s standard of personal appearance: http://www.scouting.org/Philmont/Jobs/pexpect.aspx. You will be expected to reside in housing provided by Philmont as part of your employment. Employment in the Ranch Department requires driving and you will be required to submit a current driving record from your state of license. Three moving violations or one DWI/DUI within the past three years will disqualify you from a position in the Ranch Department.
Applicants must be registered members of the Boy Scouts of American OR agree to become registered before employment begins and subscribe to the Scout Oath or Promise, the Scout Law, and the Declaration of Religious Principles. Becoming registered is an easy process and can be done through the help of Philmont.
The minimum age requirement for seasonal staff is 18. Some positions require a minimum age of 21.
